Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
(Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am )
Some tricky trumpet playing this week from the amazing Jabbo Smith, making a Spanish connection. Legend Fletcher Henderson is featured with a truly all star band, recorded just before going on to bridge the gap between Dixieland and swing. There’s a swinging nursery rhyme for the kids, plus a BIG, symphonic tune-and-a-half from Ronnie Hilton, covering a Perry Como best seller.
A rarity in the show’s line up this week, with some jazz accordion from Eric Winstone. Established in 1920, The Benson Orchestra Of Chicago serves up a hit from 1925. And, British vocalist Al Saxon belts out the 1959 theme song from the Peter Sellers film 'I’m Alright Jack'. All these gems and more, with The Hilltoppers providing the extra Sunday morning romance.
