Jules Massenet's music is set to a text by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille based on Abbe Prévost's novel, 'The Story of Chevaliere des Grieux and Manon Lescaut'. The two young lovers elope to Paris, where Manon succumbs to the temptation of luxurious living as mistress to a rich nobleman. Finally arrested and condemned to deportation, Manon dies on the road to Le Havre in the arms of her beloved chevaliere.
The title role is performed by Spanish soprano Victoria de los Angeles. Des Grieux is sung by French tenor Henri Legay. Pierre Monteux conducts the Chorus and Orchestra of l'Opéra Comique de Paris.

This tragic opera in two acts is based loosely on the life of Anne Boleyn, Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII. Its premiere in Rome in 1830 was an enormous success and marked the beginning of composer Gaetano Donizetti's international fame.
King Henry is in love with Jane Seymour. He wants to divorce Anne and marry Jane. Falsely accused and condemned as an adulteress, Anne loses her reason. American dramatic coloratura soprano Beverly Sills sings the title role. Mezzo soprano Shirley Verrett interprets Giovanna Seymour and bass Paul Plishka the part of King Henry. The London Symphony Orchestra and John Alldis Chorus are conducted by Julius Rudel.
