Naturally gifted, exceptionally original, and profoundly Russian, Modest Mussorgsky (1839 - 1887) created his greatest opera, Boris Godunov, in 1874. After its rejection by the Imperial Opera of St. Petersburg, he composed a second version which was presented posthumously at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1896, with a revised orchestration and detailed modifications by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who made the work acceptable for performance internationally.
The opera is based on a drama by Alexander Pushkin concerning events in the protagonist’s life dating from Boris’ coronation as Tsar in 1598 until his death in 1605, a life deeply troubled by conscience and self-doubt. His reign was smeared with rumours that he ascended the throne by murdering the ten-year old crown prince Dimitri. Towards the end of the opera, Boris dies after suffering a fit of madness as the forces of the pretender to his throne march on to Moscow.
Artistically, one of Mussorgsky’s most important innovations lies in his use of the speech patterns of the Russian language as the basis for his music. The dramatic and lyrical elements in his genius meet in juxtaposition, superbly balanced in opposition.
The title role is sung by the great Bulgarian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov. The other principal singers include soprano Stefka Mineva as the Polish princess Marina, tenor Michail Svetlev as the pretender Gregory, and bass Nicola Ghiuselev 基烏西利夫 as the chronicler monk Pimen. The Sofia Festival Orchestra and the Sofia National Opera Chorus perform under the baton of Emil Tchakarov.
