'Les Huguenots' is a masterpiece by the German-born French Jewish composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. Premiered in 1836 at the Paris Opéra with resounding success, this work soon established itself as one of the most popular and spectacular examples of French grand opera, a genre chiefly created by Meyerbeer with the fusion of powerful and colourful music, virtuoso vocal display, melodramatic plot, dazzling ballet, magnificent pageantry, sumptuous costumes and scenery, and stunning stage effects. With such a rich formula, Meyerbeer consolidated his artistic triumph and legendary status in his lifetime.

The text written by Eugene Scribe is based on a real historical event in which thousands of Protestants were massacred by the Catholics in Paris on St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572. Our programme offers the refined singing of Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda, Spanish dramatic coloratura Enriqueta Tarrès, and American soprano Rita Shane performing with the Radio Austria Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Ernst Märzendorfer.
