Don Giovanni is the result of the second fruitful collaboration between the musical genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and the brilliant literary talent of Lorenzo da Ponte (1749-1838). The opera had its world premiere at the Italian Opera Theatre of Prague in 1787, following their triumph of the previous year, The Marriage of Figaro.
This work, on the subject of the scandalous attempts of the Spanish nobleman to seduce numerous women and his final punishment by being dragged to the fire of hell, owes much of its success to the superior quality of the music as well as its unique blending of comic and serious elements and the rapid flow of dramatic action. The other decisive factor in the opera's immense popularity is the fascinating character of the Don himself, the blasphemer and the libertine, whose amorous adventures endear him to the men and his irresistible charm to the women among the audiences.
Our recording features the bass Roger Soyer as Don Giovanni, soprano Cheryl Studer as Donna Anna, soprano Carol Vaness as Donna Elvira, messo-soprano Susanne Mentzer
as Zerlina, bass Samuel Ramey as Leporello, and tenor Frank Lopardo as Don Ottavio. The Scottish Opera Chorus and the English Chamber Orchestra perform under the baton of conductor Daniel Barenboim.
