Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1896, is one of the important works of Italian verismo opera. Set during the French Revolution, the opera combines passionate music with political conflict and a tragic love story. Its libretto was written by Luigi Illica, who would later become one of Puccini’s most important collaborators, writing the librettos for La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly.
The story is loosely based on the life of the French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the Revolution. Although he grew up in an aristocratic environment, Chénier became deeply troubled by social injustice. In the opera, he falls in love with Maddalena, a young noblewoman. As the Revolution grows increasingly violent, their love is caught up in the political turmoil, and the two lovers ultimately face the guillotine together.
Giordano’s music is passionate and intensely dramatic, giving the singers ample opportunity to express powerful emotions. He also incorporates music associated with the French Revolution, including La Marseillaise, helping to bring the turbulent atmosphere of the period to life. With its stirring arias and moving final act, Andrea Chénier remains one of the most compelling operas of the verismo tradition.
意大利作曲家佐丹奴的歌劇《安德里亞．尚尼耶》於1896年在米蘭史卡拉歌劇院首演，是意大利真實主義歌劇的重要作品之一。故事以法國大革命為背景，將熾熱的音樂、政治衝突與悲劇愛情融為一體。歌劇由伊利卡（Luigi Illica）撰寫歌詞，他亦是普契尼的重要合作夥伴，曾為《波希米亞人》、《托斯卡》及《蝴蝶夫人》撰寫歌詞。
故事以法國詩人安德里亞．尚尼耶（André Chénier）的生平為藍本。他雖然在貴族環境中長大，卻對社會不公深感不滿。歌劇中，他愛上了貴族少女瑪達蓮娜（Maddalena）。然而，隨着法國大革命愈演愈烈，兩人的愛情亦受到政治動盪的衝擊，最終雙雙面臨斷頭台的命運。
