The final programme (for now) in our series on sculptures with a musical connection. This edition takes us to AMSTERDAM and to statues by De Onbekende Beeldhouwer (The Unknown Sculptor): The Fiddler from the Ground or The Violinist - a mind-boggling sculpture that emerges from the foyer of the Stopera concert hall and, The Invisible Violinist or The Blue Fiddler that stands on a street corner. We’ll hear a violin concerto inspired by art by Dutch composer Robin de Raaff – his Violin Concerto No. 2 'North Atlantic Light' evoking the painting by Dutch American artist De Kooning and, Bach played on a blue violin.
CHAGALL REVISITED
This week we look at Marc Chagall's painting Commedia dell’arte, originally created for the Frankfurt Opera House in 1959.
Historically, the circus, one of Chagall’s favourite subjects, had grown from the theatrical features of the old Italian Commedia dell’arte. In this extremely large 'circus' painting, all of Chagall’s favourite performers can be seen, together with an orchestra and audience. Chagall’s work is filled with brilliant colour and exuberant activity - it is joyous and life-affirming.
We will also hear Ana Sokolović’s Commedia dell'arte (I, II, III), an acclaimed trio of string quartets that bring the theatrical characters to life through music. Her very recently staged Clown(s) met with sweeping critical acclaim with reviewers recognising the work as a landmark contribution to contemporary opera.

For more than a century, visual artists have been inspired to expand their artistic practices by engaging in compelling collaborations with the ballet, theater, and opera. The Culture Show has been honing in on many of them in the past months - in particular, productions of the Ballets Russes under the direction of Diaghilev in the early part of the 20th century. On this programme we revisit Chagall, but the company has changed.
