WHERE ART AND MUSIC COLLIDE
The connections we are making this week are with works created by Paul Cézanne, Henri Fantin-Latour, John Collier and Gabriel von Max, inspired by the story of Tannhäuser and Wagner’s music.
WHERE ART AND MUSIC COLLIDE
In this episode we look at Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette - a masterpiece of French Impressionism and a celebration of happiness and prosperity - a fête galante set in a 'modern' Paris park. We’ll hear ‘dance music’ by Offenbach, Berlioz and Ravel to set the mood.

KLEE REVISITED II
Here we look even further into how Paul Klee’s art influenced numerous composers.
Color and music were the two great principles underlying Paul Klee’s art. He examined the tonal relations between colors and the rhythms of their spatial presentation. Many composers have sought to express Klee’s paintings in their music, to complement his colors with their notes.
In this programme we will hear Five Klee Pictures by Peter Maxwell Davies and a work by Sándor Veress, whose encounter with Klee’s work after fleeing Hungary in 1949 gave rise to seven fantasies combining transcendent soundscapes with an animated jazziness, presumably reflecting in music, seven of Klee’s paintings.
