WHERE ART AND MUSIC COLLIDE
The connections we are making this week are with works created by Paul Cézanne, Henri Fantin-Latour, John Collier and Gabriel von Max, inspired by the story of Tannhäuser and Wagner’s music.

KANDINSKY REVISITED I
This episode will be looking at how Kandinsky’s works became an inspiration to three contemporary composers.
Paintings from 1911–13 during Kandinsky’s earliest abstract period influenced Puerto Rico-born composer Roberto Sierra’s composition ‘Kandinsky’, which ranges from the intimate to the bold and virtuosic as he responds with fresh and surprising impressions to a selection of the artist’s unique paintings.
The artistic director of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra from 1996 to 2014, Eric Montalbetti, was also a composer. We will hear his ‘Trois études après Kandinsky’ played by François-Frédéric Guy. The key to the composer’s musical language here is in the oeuvre of the great Russian painter, viewed in reverse chronological order.
And we’ll hear a homage to Kandinsky by Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. It is a moment worth savouring, because discs documenting work by the Polish composer come along only very rarely.
