The Culture Show has been making direct connections between art inspired by music and music inspired by art. Now it’s time for more - unexpected connections...The Culture Show is continuing its look at how the visual arts and music are so connected - sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. We have unearthed a wealth of examples, yet we have so much more to explore. I hope that for those of you who join me for the music – much of which has never been, or is very seldom played on Radio 4 –  you will also develop my passion for art.  Join me, Stacey Rodda, Sunday nights at 7 pm for The Culture Show.

    THE CULTURE SHOW

In this episode we revisit one of the foremost practitioners of Fauvism - Andre Derain, and look at his involvement with the Ballet Russes' production of La boutique fantasque (The Fantastic Toyshop). The stunning music was based on Rossini piano pieces and gorgeously orchestrated by Respighi. It will be heard in a recording with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under Richard Bonynge from 1981, regarded as a reliable, highly competent benchmark in Bonynge's large catalogue of ballet recordings.

    MORTON FELDMAN’S ARTIST FRIENDS

The composer Morton Feldman had ties to a number of visual artists who included de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg and Mark Rothko. Another artist was Philip Guston.

The falling out that the two had, inspired Guston to create ‘Friend – To M.F.’, and in turn, Morton Feldman's 4-hour long trio For Philip Guston. We will hear part of it.

And Morton Feldman’s final work for solo piano, Palais de Mari (the ancient Babylonian monumental palace) was inspired by something that had fascinated him in a mural from the palace ruins in the Louvre. The extremely soft dynamic level and constant use of damper pedal enhance the ‘marvellous shimmer’ of this deeply hypnotic work that is played by Igor Levit.

Palais de Mari was premiered in the loft of Italian artist Francesco Clemente, who also produced a portrait of the composer.

    ROSSETTI, LEIGHTON AND THE HARP

The visual arts have been influenced by music and musical instruments for as long as we can imagine. In this programme, we look at the unique aesthetic beauty of the harp featured in ever so many paintings.

La Ghirlandata (1873) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti is incredibly beautiful. In it, he uses deep, rich greens and golds for the woman’s robe and the lush foliage that surrounds her. Rossetti’s subject looks directly at the viewer while playing a gilded harp. Musical instruments figure prominently in Rossetti’s work. His Morning Music captures an intimate domestic scene complete with a musician playing a type of lute.

Edmund Blair Leighton’s The End of The Song (c. 1902) depicts one of the world’s greatest legends - the tragic tale of the forbidden but undying love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Isolde. In this painting, Tristan, a gifted harpist, has just serenaded his beloved Isolde with a song of love.

You can imagine the music to come…
