The Culture Show has been making direct connections between art inspired by music and music inspired by art. Now it’s time for more - unexpected connections...The Culture Show is continuing its look at how the visual arts and music are so connected - sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. We have unearthed a wealth of examples, yet we have so much more to explore. I hope that for those of you who join me for the music – much of which has never been, or is very seldom played on Radio 4 – you will also develop my passion for art. Join me, Stacey Rodda, Sunday nights at 7 pm for The Culture Show.
Surrealist Master Salvador Dali Revisited…
accompanied by music by Uljas Pulkkis whose Symphonic Dali begins with almost film-like, sweeping introductory gestures of the first ‘painting’ - The Colossus of Rhodes. Shades of Night Descending follows, where we will gain insight into a nocturnal mysticism. The final piece of this triptych is Dawn, which intermittently creates an almost uncanny, surrealistic impression that unfolds from darkness to light.
CARAVAGGIO – KANCHELI - MONTEVERDI
We will be looking at selected works by Caravaggio, known for his ability to push the bounds of chiaroscuro in his works - strong contrasts between light and dark to create volume, depth, and drama. We will look at two of his paintings related to music – The Musicians and The Lute Player – accompanied by a contemporary work by Giya Kancheli who recreates the technique in music, AND, we will look at Rest on the Flight into Egypt' and hear music from one of Caravaggio’s contemporaries – Monteverdi, and selections from his opulent tribute to the Virgin Mary. Just as Caravaggio used piercing shafts of light against deep black backdrops, Monteverdi contrasted stark vocal dissonances with resolution in his works.
