The Culture Show has been making direct connections between art inspired by music and music inspired by art. Now it’s time for more - unexpected connections...The Culture Show is continuing its look at how the visual arts and music are so connected - sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. We have unearthed a wealth of examples, yet we have so much more to explore. I hope that for those of you who join me for the music – much of which has never been, or is very seldom played on Radio 4 – you will also develop my passion for art. Join me, Stacey Rodda, Sunday nights at 7 pm for The Culture Show.
van Gogh - Dutilleux - Rautavaara
We revisit van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Timbres, espaces, mouvement - Dutilleux’s response to the artist’s masterpiece, a ‘longing for the infinity of nature’ in which a cypress tree and a church spire rise up into the stars of the night sky. In part two, we take another look at The Starry Night through the eyes of Einojuhani Rautavaara who composed not only an opera about the life of the artist, but also an entire symphony - its first movement captures the motion of the painting created in an asylum in Saint-Rémy - the swirling, unstable night sky and the dark, grounding cypress tree, representing a mind navigating a reality detached from the physical world.
