Due to long-standing border restrictions and urban development strategies, The border area between Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong seems frozen in time and space, as if decades in the past, forming a stark contrast with the bustling cities of Shenzhen to the north and Hong Kong to the south. This has given rise to unique natural landscapes and village cultures. Since the gradual opening of the border restricted area in 2008, Hong Kong residents have shown increasing interest in these border regions, with new residents moving in and former residents returning with fresh perspectives to live in their ancestral homes. This program documents the human stories of ten border villages, exploring the distinctive character shaped by space, natural landscapes, and distance.

Nestled in Hong Kong’s northeast near Shenzhen’s Yantian Port, the tiny island of Kat O is home to fewer than 50 residents. Once bustling with over 5,000 people, the island saw its population dwindle as urban growth and the Sha Tau Kok restricted area pushed villagers to cities or abroad. Yet, the call of home remains strong, leading to the creation of the Kat O Story House beside the Tin Hau Temple. The annual Tin Hau Festival is a cornerstone of island life, drawing villagers and overseas diaspora back for rituals like midnight prayers and temple processions. Despite their advancing years, village leaders from Hakka and fishing communities work tirelessly to preserve these traditions, fostering a sense of unity. After the festivities, the island returns to quiet, but its people eagerly await the decennial Peace Prayer Ceremony, a chance to relive childhood joys.
