“Two-Gun” Cohen was a Polish-born British-Canadian adventurer who became the bodyguard to Dr Sun Yat-sen. In this episode first broadcast in 2019, historian Mark O’Neill tells the story of how this young delinquent earned the nickname “Two-Gun”, rose to protect the founding father of the Republic of China, and later became a guest of Chairman Mao.

During the Californian gold rush, men from Guangdong province travelled to Hong Kong to embark on their journey across the Pacific. In the first half of this episode originally broadcast in 2014, Dr Elizabeth Sinn tells Annemarie Evans how these migrants, along with the goods they required, fuelled Hong Kong’s prosperity. In the second half, also first aired in 2014, Australian anaesthetist Dr Jean Allison shares what life was like working here in the 1960s.
