A low-budget film, Niu Lai, or Arrival of the Ox, became an unexpected summer hit - drawing crowds for all the wrong reasons, as viewers wanted to see just how bad it was. After a slow start, memes and clips helped it surge in popularity.
Other than Niu Lai, the Eight Immortals animation was also one of the most watched films during the summer holidays on the Chinese mainland. Chloe and Brian chat with film critic Elizabeth Kerr about the animations.

It earned $34 million on its opening day, setting a new record for a US animated debut in China, and is projected to surpass 2.4 billion yuan at the box office. So what sets Zootopia apart?
