Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
‘Mon Homme” was a big 1920 tune in France, composed by Maurice Yvain, but we focus this morning on the English hit from 1921, a mighty recording by Ziegfeld Follies singer Fanny Brice. We feature a track, once again, from a modern line up playing vintage arrangements on vintage instruments: The Bratislava Hot Serenaders. Colin also digs up two big selling records of 1958 from Perry Como, as well as Billy Ternant & his orchestra, plus a country AND western swinger from Don Gibson in 1958.

This week Colin takes on a bit of polyphonic singing from the great vocal groups of the day. Covering the 1920s through to the 50s, a very young Bing Crosby as part of The Rhythm Boys, the wonderful vocal swagger of The Boswell Sisters, easy rocking with ‘four guys and a guitar’ and much more!
