Jules Massenet's Thaïs, first performed in Paris in 1894, is one of the finest examples of French lyric opera. Although best known for its famous orchestral Méditation, the opera itself is a deeply moving psychological drama.

Set in fourth-century Egypt, the story follows the monk Athanaël, who sets out to convert the beautiful courtesan Thaïs from her life of luxury. She abandons her worldly existence and embraces a life of faith, only for Athanaël to discover that he has fallen hopelessly in love with her. As Thaïs finds peace in her final moments, Athanaël realises that he has lost both his faith in Christ and his heart to Thaïs.

This month's programme features the acclaimed 2000 stellar cast recording conducted by Yves Abel, with the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine and the Chœur de l'Opéra de Bordeaux. Renée Fleming, the celebrated American soprano, sings the title role, alongside Thomas Hampson as Athanaël and Giuseppe Sabbatini as Nicias.
