    THE CULTURE SHOW

The genre we will be turning to for the next few weeks is sculpture.

Sculptures pertaining to music range from classical composer monuments and figural depictions of musicians to abstract, interactive, and sound-producing installations. This week we travel to the United States for Virtuoso by David Adickes; The Spirit of Music by Albin Polasek; Untitled (Jazz Musicians) by John Spaulding; and ‘Phoenix’ by Louis Halleux. To accompany these ‘viewings’ we will hear music by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Richard Strauss, a jazz standard with Wes Montgomery, and extracts from Paul Patterson’s Phoenix Concerto (for oboe).

    THE CULTURE SHOW

The next programme to focus on the art form of sculpture and those related to music - works that often aim to embody emotion, rhythm, or legacy. In this episode we focus on just one subject - APOLLO. We look at two statues that symbolize his position as leader of the muses, hence patron of music and poetry. We will hear music by Stravinsky and Arthur Bliss.

Music inspired by art and art inspired by music. In this episode we take another look at Kandinsky - this time, on the threshold of abstraction - and the way with which he applied musical ideas to visual form. Music - and the idea of music - appears everywhere in Kandinsky's work. We look at two of his creations in particular - All Saints I and Composition IV - and will hear 'Saint Blue' by Geoffrey Gordon, a double concerto featuring trumpet, piano and double bass inspired by Kandinsky, and Hommage to Kandinsky by Philip Sawyers.
