WHERE ART AND MUSIC COLLIDE
The connections we are making this week are with works created by Paul Cézanne, Henri Fantin-Latour, John Collier and Gabriel von Max, inspired by the story of Tannhäuser and Wagner’s music.
WHERE ART AND MUSIC COLLIDE
In this episode we look at Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette - a masterpiece of French Impressionism and a celebration of happiness and prosperity - a fête galante set in a 'modern' Paris park. We’ll hear ‘dance music’ by Offenbach, Berlioz and Ravel to set the mood.

Music inspired by art and art inspired by music. In this episode we take another look at Kandinsky - this time, on the threshold of abstraction - and the way with which he applied musical ideas to visual form. Music - and the idea of music - appears everywhere in Kandinsky's work. We look at two of his creations in particular - All Saints I and Composition IV - and will hear 'Saint Blue' by Geoffrey Gordon, a double concerto featuring trumpet, piano and double bass inspired by Kandinsky, and Hommage to Kandinsky by Philip Sawyers.
