The Culture Show has been making direct connections between art inspired by music and music inspired by art. Now it’s time for more - unexpected connections...The Culture Show is continuing its look at how the visual arts and music are so connected - sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. We have unearthed a wealth of examples, yet we have so much more to explore. I hope that for those of you who join me for the music – much of which has never been, or is very seldom played on Radio 4 –  you will also develop my passion for art.  Join me, Stacey Rodda, Sunday nights at 7 pm for The Culture Show.

    THE CULTURE SHOW

    CARAVAGGIO – KANCHELI - MONTEVERDI

We will be looking at selected works by Caravaggio, known for his ability to push the bounds of chiaroscuro in his works - strong contrasts between light and dark to create volume, depth, and drama. We will look at two of his paintings related to music – The Musicians and The Lute Player – accompanied by a contemporary work by Giya Kancheli who recreates the technique in music, AND, we will look at Rest on the Flight into Egypt' and hear music from one of Caravaggio’s contemporaries – Monteverdi, and selections from his opulent tribute to the Virgin Mary. Just as Caravaggio used piercing shafts of light against deep black backdrops, Monteverdi contrasted stark vocal dissonances with resolution in his works.

    Mondrian/ Vermeer/ Andriessen

By listening to the featured work with its corresponding artwork in mind, we can appreciate the depth of inspiration that visual art has provided to the music, creating a richer and more all-enveloping experience. The work is Dutch composer Louis Andriessen’s De Stijl - a tribute to the Dutch artistic movement of the same name, particularly the work of Piet Mondrian - a musical image of Piet Mondrian’s 'Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue' (1927), but exclusively on a conceptual basis. And we continue with highlights from Andriessen’s opera Writing to Vermeer, the 17th-century Dutch painting master who created several works portraying women writing or reading letters

This week we travel to Renaissance Italy to explore some of the masterpieces created by Leonardo da Vinci. To complement the art works discussed, we will be hearing music from the film score of LEONARDO da VINCI composed by Caroline Shaw featuring performances by the composer’s longtime collaborators Attacca Quartet, Sō Percussion, Roomful of Teeth and bassist John Patitucci. We also have music from a unique tribute to Da Vinci by the British ensemble I Fagiolini. Art historian and Da Vinci expert Martin Kemp teamed up with conductor Robert Hollingworth to use music to shine light on aspects of the 15th century genius’s body of work.

The worlds of art and music continue to collide…
