    Various scientific inventions have not only changed our lives, but also shaped our future.

    The Future Science Prize in Mathematics and Computer Science this year is awarded to Professor Chih-Yuan LU in recognition of his pioneering research in non-volatile memory (NVM). NVM is a key technology in the IT field that prevents the loss of data after the computer encounters a power failure. The NVM invented by Professor LU is equipped with the “self-annealing” function and the technology of scaling down the chips to “deep nanometer” level, thus significantly enhancing the RAM performance of computers, as well as laying a solid foundation for the future development of cloud storage, artificial intelligence, etc.

      How should a scientific award with credibility and long-term impact be operated? In this programme, Professor Anderson Ho-cheung SHUM is invited to be the docent, and listen to the practice wisdom on the selection mechanism, the fairness principle and talent motivation shared by the leading scientists together with the audience. A distinguished award is the key to igniting the spark of science.

      Episode 3 “Physical Science Prize – Topological Electronic Materials”

      Successful scientific research results often arise from collaboration between scientists from multiple disciplines. The award-winning study for the Future Science Prize in Physical Science this year – the computational prediction and experimental realisation of topological electronic materials – is a distinctive example of collaboration between three scientists, namely Professor Zhong FANG, Professor Xi DAI and Professor Hong DING.

      Professor Zhong FANG and Professor Xi DAI discovered that the “electronic band structure” of certain materials would generate an extremely stable conductivity state and resist impurities interference. On the other hand, Professor Hong DING, by using the “angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy” technology, detected the existence of “Weyl semimetal” in the laboratory for the first time.

      Their collaboration demonstrates the complementarity of theoretical prediction and experimental authentication. It not only transforms the once abstract scientific theories into materials that can be applied practically, but also shows the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

      Episode 2 “Life Science Prize – Origin of Birds from Dinosaurs”

      Entering its tenth year, the Future Science Prize, an annual mega event for the scientific community, is held in Hong Kong again this year.

      Professor Qiang JI, Professor Xing XU and Professor Zhonghe ZHOU are jointly awarded the Life Science Prize this year for their in-depth research on fossil evidence discovered in western Liaoning, China, which supported the development of the hypothesis of the origin of birds from dinosaurs into a theory widely accepted by international science community.

      The research by the three scientists revealed the close connection between dinosaurs and birds in body structure, behaviour and evolution. This is not only a major breakthrough in palaeontology, but also an occasion for scientists to take a fresh look at the process of the evolution of life.

      Episode 1 “Review on Previous Future Science Prizes and Introduction to Laureates”

      The Future Science Prize aims to promote the development of basic science and to recognise scientists who have made outstanding contributions. It is proudly celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.

      The first episode of the programme will present the winning research results of this year’s three Prizes – the Life Science Prize, the Physical Science Prize and the Mathematics and Computer Science Prize. It will also review the development of the Prize over the past nine years. In fact, five of the 46 laureates are Hong Kong scientists. They are Professor Dennis LO Yuk-ming, Professor Kam-biu LUK, Professor Kwok-yung YUEN, Professor Malik PEIRIS and Professor Ngai-ming MOK. Just like all other laureates, they demonstrate their passion and dedication to science, and contribute to the advancement in science jointly.

      Science prizes not just mean recognition for achievements. What’s more, they create platforms for scientists from different disciplines to meet, exchange ideas and inspire each other, and to enlighten the next generation.
