Due to long-standing border restrictions and urban development strategies, The border area between Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong seems frozen in time and space, as if decades in the past, forming a stark contrast with the bustling cities of Shenzhen to the north and Hong Kong to the south. This has given rise to unique natural landscapes and village cultures. Since the gradual opening of the border restricted area in 2008, Hong Kong residents have shown increasing interest in these border regions, with new residents moving in and former residents returning with fresh perspectives to live in their ancestral homes. This program documents the human stories of ten border villages, exploring the distinctive character shaped by space, natural landscapes, and distance.
