Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
For the first show of the year, it's an all star line up, of course. Some big time orchestras featured, with Ambrose and his orchestra with Sam Browne, Abe Lyman and his California orchestra, The Duke... and more, as we swing into ‘26.

What a life and career Maurice Auguste Chevalier had, the recordings, stage performances and movies. This week on VCT, Colin features a very stylish track recorded in 1929 with the Leonard Joy Orchestra. Carl Barriteau was playing clarinet in a local police band in Trinidad before becoming Melody Maker’s "best clarinetist" for years. A phenomenal player, featured here with ‘a sultan goes to Harlem'. We'll also dive into the mailbag once again with two very different requests from two different sides of the world, and, we have a swinging tribute to Cleo Laine.
