Colin takes us back even further in time with this week'a vintage recordings. We start off with the wax cylinder, introduced to the world in 1877, and it sparked a revolution as the first popular audio recording and playback format. Its popularity peaked from the late 1880s through 1909. We go back to 1907 for a recording by rock star of the time Enrico Caruso! And by way of slight contrast, from the era long after the wax cylinder, and even after the era of the 78rpm disc, we travel to India, where these discs seemed to still be being pressed and we hear from…The Beatles!
Lots of excuses to roll back the carpet and boogie this Sunday morning. Tony Aless is at the piano with a swinging Teddy Powell 1941 release, a song still popular, apparently, with partner dancers… in Finland! Fact. Our all acoustic rocker this week comes from 1925, featuring Clarence Williams and the blue five, but listen out for Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet battling out the solos. On the country side of things, Chet Atkinson is producing a sad one for‘Gentleman Jim’ in 1959. Plus, lots more as we explore the million sellers of yesteryear.

Earlier this summer, Colin visited the The Mouth Of The Tyne Festival in the north east of England, and spoke to some of the local band leaders and musicians who were performing there this year.They choose some of their favourite vintage chart toppers, including music from Jimmy Dorsey, Bix Beiderbecke, and Jelly Roll Morton, and there are 'live' recordings of the festival itself on the show.
