Gaetano Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, first performed in 1832, is one of the most charming and beloved works in the Italian bel canto repertoire. Combining graceful melodies with light-hearted humour, the opera tells a simple yet touching story of love, innocence, and self-discovery, and continues to delight audiences with its warmth and wit.

The shy and naïve Nemorino is deeply in love with the wealthy and independent Adina, but struggles to win her heart. Believing in the power of a magical love potion sold by the quack doctor Dulcamara, Nemorino places his hopes in the elixir, only to discover that true love cannot be bought. Featuring sparkling ensembles and the famous aria "Una furtiva lagrima", the opera perfectly showcases Donizetti's gift for lyrical expression and comic timing.

This month's classic recording features soprano Joan Sutherland as Adina, tenor Luciano Pavarotti as Nemorino, baritone Dominic Cossa as Belcore, and bass Spiro Malas as Dulcamara, with the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Richard Bonynge.
