      The Scourge of Etomidate

      In response to the alarming surge in cases of teenagers abusing "," “etomidate”the Hong Kong government amended subsidiary legislation on February 14, 2025, officially classifying etomidate—t—and its three analogs as dangerous drugs. Under the new law, trafficking etomidate can result in life imprisonment and a maximum fine of HK$5 million.

      Etomidate is an illicitly mixed e-liquid containing harmful substances, typically consumed through e-cigarette devices. Since 2023, it has gained popularity among local youth. While overall drug abuse cases in the first three quarters of 2024 decreased by 9% compared to the same period in 2023 (from 4,485 to 4,082 cases), the number of reported drug abusers under 21 years old increased from 538 to 593. etomidate has become the third most commonly abused drug among this age group.
      The Narcotics Division has intensified public awareness campaigns, urging parents to remain vigilant. Signs such as possession of alternative smoking products or unexplained bruises on limbs may indicate etomidate abuse.

      This episode features representatives from the Narcotics Division and the Hong Kong Police Force, who will discuss current strategies to combat " etomidate." Additionally, a former user will share their personal experience, shedding light on how the drug has impacted their physical and mental health, as well as family relationships.
