According to the latest figures provided by the Education Bureau, in 2025, there are currently over 5,000 absenteeism cases across Hong Kong, the highest in nine years. However, children who attend school only one or two days a week, or even just a few hours, are not included in this count.
Youth organizations stated that these potential cases are more severe than imagined. The longer a student is intermittently absent, the more difficult it becomes for them to reintegrate into school life. In the past, the government and various social welfare organizations have provided different types of support and programs for absentee students. How effective have these measures been?
