World Hypertension Day / Halal certification

    Presenters:Azam Khan and Mike Rowse

On Tuesday’s Backchat, we looked ahead to World Hypertension Day which will take place on May 17.

According to the previous Population Health Survey conducted between 2020 and 2022, the total prevalence of hypertension was 29.5 percent among Hong Kong people aged between 15 and 84.

Hypertension may cause serious health problems like stroke, coronary heart disease and heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and even early death, but it is considered a “silent killer” as it seldom shows symptoms until complications arise. We talked to doctors about how prevalent the problem is right now, and what the different treatment options are.

We also heared about a new clinical tool developed by the University of Hong Kong that can help stroke patients combat hypertension.

After the news, we talked about a recent Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong. Both parties agreed to establish a Halal related Q-mark, to recognise products and services certificated by the Islamic Community Fund in achieving Halal standards.

    9:05am-9:30am: World Hypertension Day

9:05am-9:09am: Dr Teo Kay-Cheong, Deputy Director of the Stroke Research and Prevention Group, The University of Hong Kong
9:05am-9:30am: Dr Aaron Lee, Family Doctor

    9:32am-10:00am: Halal quality certification

9:32am-10:00am: Anthony Lam, Executive Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Chairman of the Hong Kong Q-Mark Council
