China has just started a 15-year process to gradually raise the statutory retirement age by up to five years as the nation grapples with an ageing population and a shrinking workforce. It’s the first time the retirement age has been raised since the 1950s, and comes as the state-led pension system faces major financial strain. This Saturday morning on Trending China, CM Chan and Chloe Feng will be joined by Stuart Gietel-Basten, Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to explore the implications of this policy shift.
