One might not expect orchestral conducting to be such a battleground, yet Zubin Mehta feverishly organised a pick-up orchestra in seven days to perform at a refugee camp after the Hungarian Revolution. Jiří Bělohlávek became Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic in 1990 after decades of travel restrictions. Sergiu Celibidache received his first major appointment in 1945 after his predecessor was mistakenly shot dead.
