數月前，第四台台長蕭樹勝邀請我主持一連五集，慶祝美國作曲家的節目。他說，有好幾位美國當紅的作曲家將於今年迎來重要生日，藉此機會跟香港聽眾分享一下吧。我們決定介紹以下七位作曲家；名字中有女有男(已經是2017年了，當然要顧及性別平等)，有花甲之年的「移民」譚盾，也有土生土長，今年八十歲當紅的作曲家格拉斯(Philip Glass) 和七十歲的阿當斯(John Adams)。我們也把目光投向早期美國音樂歷史，找來兩位於本年度紀念誕生百週年和一百五十週年的已故作曲家— 夏利臣(Lou Harrison) 和比卓(Amy Beach)。在紐約家中翻閱一大堆錄音資料後，我決定也要探索兩位我心目中「最酷」的女偶像音樂家：慶祝七十五歲生日的蒙克(Meredith Monk) 和七十歲的多媒體藝術家兼小提琴家安德遜(Laurie Anderson)。
The year 2017 marks some major birthdays for American composers: Philip Glass becomes an octogenarian, John Adams a septuagenarian, and Tan Dun completes a full sixty-year cycle per the traditional Chinese calendar. I also devote an episode to two deceased American composers: Amy Beach
(1867–1944) and Lou Harrison (1917–2003). Another episode highlights two of the most innovative women composer-performers who have become role models for so many: Meredith Monk (b. 1942) and Laurie Anderson (b. 1947).
