MAGRITTE AND THE TUBA
Clouds, pipes, bowler hats, green apples and tubas: these remain some of the most immediately recognisable icons of René Magritte, the Belgian painter and well-known Surrealist. This week we focus on the tuba in Magritte’s work – in particular, The Central Story (1927), Threatening Weather (1928) and The Discovery of Fire (1935). We’ll hear music written for the instrument by Sophia Gubaidulina, her ‘Lamento’, Widening Circles by Joshua William Mills and Asha Srinivasan’s Dyadic Affinities.

The history of painters and sculptors designing sets and costumes for opera and dance is exceptionally rich. We’ve learned that over the course of a few months by exploring Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes who brought together Darius Milhaud, Coco Chanel, Jean Cocteau, and Bronislava Nijinska with Pablo Picasso. Countless others followed. In the 21st century we can include visual artist Tacita Dean.
Her collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor and composer Thomas Adès on The Dante Project is a part of the lineage previously mentioned. This episode focuses on 'Dante' and its creators.
