    The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) organises a project on the production and exchange of children’s dramas every year, in which the works mainly focus on children development.  ABU member TV stations exchange ideas through children’s dramas in refined and simple languages.  They produce touching children’s dramas full of childlike innocence, with an aim that children worldwide can understand the plots, and thus be inspired and nurtured.  This series of “17th ABU Children’s Drama” consists of 10 episodes of greater variety, showcasing lives and cultures of different regions.  Production units come from Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Mainland China and Hong Kong.

    Hesti and Ojo are scout team members, but they never cooperated well. Instead, they often made fun of each other. In an orienteering activity at the annual camp event, they divided in groups and competed for the trophy. Ojo left the group alone to play tricks on the other teams, but he fell at a small slope and got injured. Hesti’s group heard Ojo crying for help, and saved Ojo regardless of past grudges. Their mentor hoped that through this incident, all team members could learn to help each other and become better persons. Ojo apologised to Hesti for his previous behaviours, and Hesti said it was too much to have even one enemy and they would be friends forever.

      Meng Meng often refused to play football with his friends and stayed home to play video games instead. He not only became thinner as he ate little, but also had blurred vision. Meng Meng’s mum didn’t want him to neglect diet and sport because of playing video games. At the same time, she hoped Meng Meng, as her only son, could help on some housework. After introspection, Meng Meng started to help on the housework, and apologised to his friends sincerely.

    • Episode 7: Gramps Bowl (Japan)

      After Yudai’s Grandpa passed away, Yudai and his parents went back to Grandpa’s house to pack his stuffs. His parents said they had to break Grandpa’s rice bowl, or else his soul would be trapped in the house and get lost. Yudai hid the bowl as he was afraid that Grandpa would disappear forever. Suddenly, the voice of Grandpa in the bowl spoke that he wanted Yudai to fulfil his wish, i.e. watching a Samba dance together. While they were seeking the Samba performance everywhere, Grandpa said he would never disappear as he was at Yudai’s heart. After Yudai fulfilled Grandpa’s wish, Grandpa’s bowl was broken, and a “Thank You” note appeared on Yudai’s bicycle. Upon returning home, Yudai and his parents buried Grandpa’s bowl in the back yard garden of Grandpa’s house.

      Samart is a former Muaythai champion. He accidentally killed his opponent in a match. His son, Ton, repeatedly got into fights with his classmates because they made fun of him for having a murderous father. Ton has all along wanted to learn Muaythai from his father. Samart explained that Muaythai was a type of sport, not a solution for such issues. In a fight duel with his classmates, Ton talked to the son of Samart’s opponent, Tui, and realised the meaning of Muaythai and the value of forgiveness. At last, Samart started the Muaytai training with Ton and Tui.

    • Episode 5: Magic Music Box (China)

      Youran is a new comer of the farmer market. He is shy and never played with other kids. Jingwen brought out a plan. The kids found a magic music box—when the light projected on their bodies, they would be frozen; and when music started to play, they would follow the music and dance. After deceiving Youran into joining them, they confessed to Youran that this was just a trick to let him join, and the music box had no magic. They knew that he was often alone after his Grandma passed away, and so they wanted to invite him to play together. Youran was very touched and danced with them happily.

    • Episode 4: Heavy Metal Brother (Malaysia)

      Rina lives with her family in harmony. However, her relationship with her older brother, Rizal, was not really great as she could not understand his interest in the heavy metal music. One day, she found him wearing white face-paint while listening to music, and felt that her brother had become increasingly weird. Rina and her friend, Eliza, got into Rizal’s room while he was out, and spied on him when he went to work at a hospital. She saw Rizal dressing as a clown and thought that he was trying to hurt a patient. Rizal explained everything to Rina. Rina felt guilty as she had misunderstood her brother simply based on what he liked, and she realised her brother’s gentleness and eagerness to help others.

      Little Tania is her mother’s only child. She is 7 years old but her father died shortly after she was born. She felt disappointed with her mother as her classmates’ parents gave them a lot of gifts. She did not understand that her mother, who worked in the factory, relied on her meagre earnings to cover the family expenses and her tuition fees, and could no longer afford to buy any gifts for her. One day, Tania’s mother gave her a magic pencil as a gift, and told her that whatever she drew with it, it would become real. Later, Tania found out that her mother spent her own money to buy whatever Tania drew, but was distressed as she didn’t have enough money for a bicycle. Tania finally understands her mother’s difficulties and unconditional love.

      An elementary-school girl Fumi lost her mother. One day, her father introduced her to a unique lady, Tome, with okappa (bobbed cut) hair. The two got along well and Tome taught Fumi cycling. Fumi later found out that her father intended to re-marry Tome and she was very resistant. After a period of time, Fumi recalled the happy times spent with Tome and tried to break out of her own shell. She rode a bicycle to Tome’s hair salon, asking Tome to do an okappa hair cut for her, and the three live happily together ever after.

      Episode 1: Football Fantasia (Hong Kong)

      The story is about three 9-year-old boys, Chung, Joy and Chubs, who are all football lovers. During the epidemic, all interest classes were cancelled and the three children could only stay home most of the time. As the smartest boy among the three, Chung would remind the other two to continue practising football every day. Although the three boys tried to think of different ways to improve their football skills, the results were not satisfactory due to physical constraints. Having no idea when these days would come to an end, the boys start to think of some ways to break through the limit of distance with their remarkable creativity and play a “real” game.
