School: Hong Chi Winifred Mary Cheung Morninghope School
Awardees: Chong Man-kuen , Shiu Shun-kin, Yuen Pui-yee
Hong Chi Winifred Mary Cheung Morninghope School has over 300 students, ranging from Primary 1 to Secondary 6, including children with autism, mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, and Down syndrome. In general, they tend to focus on themselves and have special education needs, including learning how to manage their emotions. The three teachers from the Guidance and Discipline Team—Ms. Yuen Pui-yee, Mr. Shiu Shun-kin, and Ms. Chong Man-kuen — embrace the challenges every day in the classroom.
The teachers have designed a series of tools to help students express and manage their emotions, such as emotion wheels, emotion mirrors and calming bottles. Intellectually challenged students often struggle with verbal expression. They are, however, sensitive to colours and visuals, so colourful and eye-catching tools can help them communicate their thoughts. They learn well when they are able to manage their emotions.
The school holds annual rites of passage for students, marking important milestones in their development. For example, the Tie Presentation Ceremony signifies that Form 4 students are now senior students, as well as role models for other students. With proper guidance and training, the students can grow into independent individuals and integrate into the community despite their limitations.
