According to the suicide data released by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at the University of Hong Kong, the suicide rate among adolescents under the age of 15 in Hong Kong increased in 2023. Earlier, the government, through cross-departmental collaboration among the Health Bureau, the Education Bureau, and the Social Welfare Department, implemented a three-tier emergency mechanism in all secondary schools across Hong Kong this year. This school-based mechanism aims to work with stakeholders to identify and support high-risk students early. But what are the reasons behind student suicides?  And is the newly implemented emergency mechanism effective?

The theme of this year’s Book Fair is “Food Culture·Future Living”. Food provides nutrients for the body, while reading nourishes our mind. The annual Book Fair will be held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 16th to 22nd, featuring more than 620 cultural activities. There are seminars related to food. For example, the fifth-generation successor of a time-honoured restaurant, the first female commercial astronaut in the US, Sian “Leo” Proctor and others, will share their insights on food from multiple perspectives of culture, life, and future technology.

In the north of Scotland, Colin McAllister is an airplane pilot in the Orkney Islands. In this isolated territory, it is better to embark at its side to move quickly. At the controls of his nine-seater twin-engine, he lands and takes off about ten times a day! Its passengers are doctors, teachers or farmers and are used to the uncertainty of weather conditions…

Hong Kong generates around 11,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) daily, most of which ends up in landfills. With limited land resources and ever-increasing waste, landfills are approaching full capacity. To tackle this, the government has accelerated the development of "Waste to Energy" facilities, such as incinerators (I·PARKs), sludge treatment facilities (T·PARK), and organic waste recovery centres (O·PARKs). These aim to reduce landfill reliance and turn waste into valuable resources. Incineration technology, already widely used overseas, will soon be introduced to Hong Kong with the completion of the first next-generation incinerator (I·PARK1) in 2025. It is expected to process 3,000 tonnes of MSW daily and convert waste into electricity. Older incinerators were known to release harmful pollutants like dioxins, but how will this new technology minimizes emissions? What other environmental policies can support its implementation?

We have a very special guest with us today, pianist Aristo Sham. Last month, Sham was chosen as the winner in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in which 340 pianists from 45 countries and regions had entered. Sham was among 28 pianists invited to compete in Fort Worth, Texas in the United States. During the final round, Sham played Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. He’s now back in Hong Kong after winning the gold medal and he’s with us right now.

Jessica Shell came from Russia, but she calls herself “Fake Gwei-Mui (western girl)” on social media. She even gives herself a Chinese name. A part-time model, she came to Hong Kong from Russia six years ago and fell in love with the city. She likes the way of life and the environment here. She enjoys Cantopop, and is more local than many locals. Jessica adores a local boy band, and becomes mesmerised with Cantonese. She understands Cantonese but cannot speak the language. She hopes to learn more about the essence of Cantonese and its slang, but she finds Cantonese courses available are too simple. She wishes there were more in-depth programmes so she can learn more than the basics of Cantonese. Jessica aspires to be an actor, as well as “be a real part of Hong Kong”.

"March of the volunteers", the national anthem of China, is related to the bravery of Chinese young people resisting Japan's aggression of China. It was originally the theme song of the movie "Sons and Daughters in a Time of Storm" which depicts the heroic stories of young Chinese marching to the front line to defend their country against Japanese aggression. Hong Kong is part of China. The National Anthem Ordinance came into force in June 2020.
