海明威(Ernest Hemingway)所寫的經典戰爭小說For Whom the Bell Tolls這本小說出版於1940年，中文譯名有《喪鐘為誰而鳴》以及《戰地鐘聲》。
“Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”
任何人的死亡都會使我感到渺小，因為我與其他的人息息相關，因此不要問喪鐘為誰而鳴，它是為你而鳴。
“for whom the bell tolls” 是一個典型的 古典英語結構，使用 whom 表示賓語，現代英「文常簡化為 “who”。“thee” 是古英文第二人稱單數 “you” 的對應形式，莎士比亞時期的作品會經常使用。」
“How old must you be before you know that? There is only now, and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion.”
「你要到什麼年齡才會明白這一點？如果現在只有兩天，這兩天就是你的一生，生命中的一切事情都會按比例出現。」
