Presenter:Colin Aitchison
Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
‘Mon Homme” was a big 1920 tune in France, composed by Maurice Yvain, but we focus this morning on the English hit from 1921, a mighty recording by Ziegfeld Follies singer Fanny Brice. We feature a track, once again, from a modern line up playing vintage arrangements on vintage instruments: The Bratislava Hot Serenaders. Colin also digs up two big selling records of 1958 from Perry Como, as well as Billy Ternant & his orchestra, plus a country AND western swinger from Don Gibson in 1958.
A real musical wave….or weave….this week, with Colin. Some couth and culture is provided by a big voice from Derry in Ireland. There's a 1954 Jessie Stone blues tune covered over and over as rock ‘n roll kicked in. And, we open up the mailbag, once again, for a requested vintage chart topper.

Two very fine jazz musicians in the 50s were Homer & Jethro, but you might not pick up on it right away as you look through their records, because they produced many very funny comedy pieces in a full on country and western style, Colin chooses one of their finest and funniest this week, but you will surely hear their terrific musicianship. Another high point on this week’s show is American muso Jack Harris, who moved from the States to the UK in the 20s, and went on to influence the British dance scene in a big way, as you will hear in a swinging 1938 recording with steam coming off the phonograph needle.
