Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the '20s, '30s, '40s and '50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
A little classical culture this week, from 'the biggest little band in the land', when "Mr Haydn Get’s Hip". And, may we say, not only does it swing like the clappers, but it is an astonishingly bright and clear radio recording from 1941. A rare gem. We also hear from Cheery Chubby Charlie, Marion Harris, story telling Max, Joe Moony playing gigolo, and a top ten million seller for Lavern Baker. Plus, a look at the year 1921.
We’re putting all our eggs in one basket, this Easter weekend. We actually have TWO special readings; one from preacher Bing Crosby, the other from preacher Louis Armstrong reading from the good book with the Cy Oliver choir. With her bonnet and bunnies we have Rosemary Clooney from 1955. And, Ken Collier leads the Easter parade.

This week on VCT : A collection of very popular 78rpm discs that were sold at hardware stores and news agents at very affordable prices across the UK. One of the biggest producers and sellers of these titles were Woolworths, and they came in a variety of novelty sizes, 6, 7, 8 and 10-inch sized discs, featuring names like Alfredo & His Band on the Edison Bell Radio label, Bertini & The Tower Blackpool Dance Band on the Eclipse label and, of course, many more. Plus, a big Hong Kong song from 1956 on the Embassy label.
