Music aficionado and band leader Colin Aitchison presents the musicians who were the huge, million-selling recording stars of an often forgotten era.
Before Bruno Mars, there was Bing Crosby, before the likes of Adele, there was Billie Holiday ... and before Justin Bieber ... well, where to start!?!
There’s some terrific music and stories from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, plus a few laughs!
Every Sunday, 8.30am-9am
‘Mon Homme” was a big 1920 tune in France, composed by Maurice Yvain, but we focus this morning on the English hit from 1921, a mighty recording by Ziegfeld Follies singer Fanny Brice. We feature a track, once again, from a modern line up playing vintage arrangements on vintage instruments: The Bratislava Hot Serenaders. Colin also digs up two big selling records of 1958 from Perry Como, as well as Billy Ternant & his orchestra, plus a country AND western swinger from Don Gibson in 1958.

This week's show was recorded on Friday the 4th of July in front of a live audience at New Town Plaza in Sha Tin. It’s part of a series of RTHK POP UP shows celebrating the world of vinyl and shellac recordings, plus, this week, there's live music from The VCT Syncopators, with Colin Aitchison on trumpet... and wind-up record player! There's plenty of music from the roaring 20s through to the 1950s, both on portable gramophone and live from the band.
