    In April, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council announced that after more than ten years, M+ will no longer be overseeing Hong Kong’s entry to the Venice Biennale. The Hong Kong Museum of Art will take over for the 2026 biennale and will be presenting the work of several artists selected from a 200-strong list. Trevor Yeung was Hong Kong’s entry in the 60th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2024. His entry is now being presented at M+ in a reconfigured form.

    Originally from Shenyang in China, Li Hei Di is now based in London. “Tongues of Flare” is Li’s first solo exhibition with the Pace Gallery. The exhibition features 11 new paintings and a wooden sculpture, exploring Li’s ruminations on sexuality, monstrosity and transfiguration.

    The “Hong Kong Artists” series organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is a group of concerts that highlight local music talents. This year, the series includes six programmes that feature local musicians. Among them is violinist Nina Wong, who’ll be performing with pianist Shelley Ng. They’re with us right now.

      Animation Artist Florence Lee and Her Altered Fairy Tale of HK & In the studio: Jue Yao & Niu Niu

      In her solo exhibitions, "Double Blue: An Altered Fairytale of Hong Kong" Chapters one and two, local artist Florence Yuk-ki Lee adopts experimental animation to rewrite the narrative of the city. Connection to place, a.k.a. topophilia, lies at the heart of Lee's creations. Through aeroplane windows and the meshes of a fishing net, visitors are invited to become storytellers, assembling their own portrait of Hong Kong from everyday textures, fragments of memories, and traces of emotions.

      In the studio: Violinist Jue Yao & Pianist Niu Niu
      Without a conductor, ten musicians rotating in four distinct ensembles take audiences on a journey across a century of European music with works by Puccini, Shostakovich, Mendelssohn and Dvořák. This ambitious programme, titled “Encounter with City’s Talent – A Chamber Dialogue”, is a collaboration between violinist Jue Yao, pianist Niu Niu, and the Hong Kong String Orchestra. Yao and Niu are joining us together for the first time.

      This year’s French May programme “Bassoon and Baton” was a rare and special occasion for the bassoon to take centre stage, as prize-winning musician Sophie Dervaux made her Hong Kong debut. Dervaux has been the principal bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra since 2015.

      Creativity can be the talent to create something entirely new. It can also be the ability to present ordinary things in an extraordinary way. Local artist Fong Ka-sin, who is a computer programmer by profession, reimagined and reinterpreted buttons that we see and touch daily, and turned them into thought-provoking interactive installations.

      In the studio:
      Local pianist and conductor KaJeng Wong's Music Lab founded the Atlas Ensemble last year. This April, they are presenting all five of Beethoven’s concertos across two concerts. It's a rarely attempted feat that highlights Beethoven’s virtuosity while celebrating diversity of interpretation. KaJeng Wong is in the studio to share more about the concerts and his upcoming projects.

      Oversized Painting Revealed on Streets by Painter Jobeyhon & in the studio: Russian Pianist Dmitry Shishkin

      To think and paint beyond boundaries, home-born artist Joannah Hon (@jobeyhon) went on the streets with her works. She revealed her oversized oil paintings around the city and posed next to the local cultural icons she had depicted. These actions were filmed and the short videos went viral on her social media. Reaching viewers and buyers directly, Hon has taken the unconventional way to becoming an artist.

      Talented Russian pianist Dmitry Shishkin is well known for major competition victories, celebrated for his technical brilliance and his subtly imaginative phrasing. A powerful presence among today’s young stars, he came to Hong Kong again to stage a concert with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

      Print artist Cheung Tsz-ki devotes himself to mezzotint, a particular form of copperplate printmaking. The Italian name mezzotint means “half-tint”. Through creating mezzotints, Cheung explores bright and dark, light and shadow, seeking ambiguity and stillness.
