Race Across the World is an ambitious factual-entertainment series that pits travellers against each other in a challenging race to reach the Far East without taking a single flight. Adventurers hit the open-road, with no modern trappings such as mobile phones, and travel through astonishing scenery and cross continents using whatever mode of transport they can. From trains to pickup trucks and ferries to tuk-tuks, it is an illuminating and authentic look at travelling and a competitive race to reach the finish line in the fastest time.
As five teams become four, they are now more focused than ever on reaching the final destination of Singapore. They depart Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on the third leg of the race – taking them across the vast deserts, mountains and Silk Road cities of Central Asia to the ancient capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent.
But before they head across this sparsely-populated wilderness, the teams must negotiate the Caspian Sea. Just hours into the voyage, a storm descends, forcing the ferry to drop anchor. Its sister ship sank under similar conditions several years ago so nerves are on edge. And as the days at sea go by, food supplies begin to dwindle, fresh water runs out and cabin fever sets in…
The Race to Singapore has begun and the five teams head out of Delphi to their next checkpoint - Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. A journey that will see them leave behind the familiarity of the west for the exotic and unknown of the east - two thousand miles out of Greece, across the lengths of Turkey and Georgia, and into oil-rich Azerbaijan.
But as the teams set off, their need for speed and travelling smart is more pressing than ever - for the team arriving last into Baku will be eliminated from the competition.
Our five pairs set off on a race to Singapore without taking a single flight. They will leave behind their smartphones, internet access and credit cards, and will be armed with only the cash equivalent of a one-way airfare to Singapore, the furthest destination by land and rail from the UK, to pay for the entire journey. If they run out, they'll need to earn more. In a competition that sees our teams travel through rather than fly over, their skill, ingenuity and determination will be tested to the extreme as they race through some of the world’s most beautiful scenery, form bonds and friendships across cultural divides and rely on the kindness of strangers in order to stand the best chance of winning.
In the first episode, the teams set off from Greenwich. They must pass through five checkpoints to reach their final destination. First up: the ancient city of Delphi.
