Pianist KaJeng Wong came to our show a few weeks ago to give us a preview of this year’s Music Lab Festival. The festival’s still under way, but one of the highlights so far was the recent concert by pianist Jerold Chu. Jerold and his band will be with us later on the show to tell us more about his original music compositions. But first, movies. Some film directors like to use the same actors over and over again. This repeated actor-director dynamic can be seen in the work of such directors as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino. Playwright and film director Martin McDonagh recently reunited two actors with whom he’d last worked in 2008, and for him and for them the old chemistry was still there. In March, McDonagh was here to attend the Hong Kong International Film Festival. We went to talk to him.

Dragon's Back has been selected as one of "the best hikes in Hong Kong" by internationally renowned travel guides. Its proximity to the city, coupled with its scenic beauty, attracts many tourists who come here eagerly. At Dragon's Back, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding areas, including Big Wave Bay, Clear Water Bay Peninsula, and Stanley. Among them, Shek O in the southeastern part of Hong Kong Island is also a popular weekend destination for locals. After completing the Dragon's Back hike, the hosts then proceed to Shek O to take on the challenge of rock climbing. They have also invited an expert in rocky shore ecology to teach them how to observe the tiny yet resilient organisms that cling to the rocky shores.

The inaugural Chinese Culture Festival brings a rich and colourful array of programmes, including large-scale performances such as the majestic opening dance drama Five Stars Rising in the East etc.

Building homes while being people-oriented has always been the concept of the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA). Therefore, during the development process, the team of architects would not just focus on buildings. Great importance is also attached to the respect for natural ecology, the protection of traditional culture, as well as the care for neighbourhood community. “Symbiosis and co-existence” has become an important motto in the development blueprint for public housing. In recent years, many public housing estates have been constructed in the New Territories. It is not too difficult to find many environmental protection facilities in the housing estates. From waste reduction, material recycling, energy saving to greening and other aspects, the Housing Department team duly retains natural materials and incorporates them into the design of the housing estates, so as to create a healthy and comfortable living space that is in harmony with the countryside environment. Furthermore, the HA devotes much effort to preserve and pass on the historical and cultural legacies surrounding the development areas. Through cooperation with artists as well as communication and coordination with different stakeholders in the community, the architects have incorporated considerations for heritage conservation and humanity during the design process. Building a new community does not mean that the old traditional culture must be destroyed. A balance can be struck between preservation and destruction.

It wasn't until 1998 that the government officially designated the surrounding area as Lung Fu Shan Country Park, which is also the smallest country park in Hong Kong. Despite its small size, Lung Fu Shan Country Park is full of character. For instance, the park features the historic Pinewood Battery, which is listed as a Grade II historic buildings in Hong Kong and serves as a reminder of Battle of Hong Kong history during the past. In addition to its cultural heritage, the park is also rich in ecological diversity. The streams within the park are home to various organisms, including freshwater prawns and stream crabs. By observing carefully, visitors may also spot traces of wildlife such as porcupines, masked palm civets, and short-nosed fruit bats within the park.

Minhas Rashad, who came to Hong Kong in the 1980s, has lived in Hong Kong for over 30 years. Fluent in Cantonese, he masters the language's colloquialisms and brings joy to neighbourhood residents with his local humour. He has four sons, aged 14 to 26. As far as raising children goes, he has his own set of theories. He thinks Hong Kong parents attach too much importance to their children's academic results. For him, nothing is more important than a happy childhood for his sons. He gives them a lot of freedom to realise their potentials. While Father’s Day is not celebrated in Pakistan, for him, every day is Father’s Day. Shokat Nawaz, the father of our Pakistani host Omme, came to Hong Kong in 1990 and attended school in the city. For his daughter, he is an unconventional Pakistani father. He hoped his daughter Omme could learn Chinese properly in secondary school and so transferred her to a mainstream school. He also encouraged her to study hard and give back to the community in future. Omme thinks her father is very open and has a great deal of respect for him. The two Pakistani fathers have lived in Hong Kong for many years – their children were all born and bred in Hong Kong. Father's Day is approaching, they will share with us the stories of them and their children.

In recent years, the number of patients waiting for organ transplants has increased. In fact, even if citizens have registered their willingness to donate organs, family members still have the right to make the final decision, resulting in few successful matches each year. There are suggestions to change the current "voluntary donation" mechanism to a "presumed consent donation" (opt-out) system. Is this mechanism suitable for implementation in Hong Kong? What is daily life like for patients waiting for a suitable organ? And what kind of support is needed for patients fortunate enough to receive an organ donation on their path to recovery?
