    Jimmy's Big Bee Rescue - Episode 2

Jimmy’s mission to save the bees continues – but as an entomology obsessive he knows that bees aren’t the only vital insect. Jimmy explains that flies, ladybirds and beetles all have important jobs to do. Moths are brilliant pollinators, doing at night what bees are doing during the day. All of them are under threat. Jimmy investigates how technology might be the answer to habitat loss. He visits a vertical farm – a colossal glasshouse that produced 80 million tomatoes a year, with vines growing 16 metres high in a space equivalent to 12 football pitches. This kind of farming uses up to 40% less land than conventional methods, leaving more space for biodiversity. But not everything can be grown this way, so while it could be part of the answer, more needs to be done.

And sometimes doing something actually means doing less. In a garden in the city, the residents have stopped mowing the grass altogether. The result is a spectacular field of dandelions. They might be seen as weeds, but dandelions provide 5% of all nectar for bees; white clover provides almost 30%. In Jimmy’s mission to transform spaces into spectacular wildflower pit-stops, he visits each one. The picture is mixed; some places are looking better than others. And it’ll soon be time to conduct another bee count to see if he’s improved the situation.

Jimmy visits another farm to see a scheme that is designed to encourage farmers to grow wildflowers. The farmer has devoted a huge area to flowering plants and the results are fantastic. Jimmy is convinced that rewarding farmers for benefiting the environment could make a huge and lasting effect, and reverse the decline in bees. But only if it becomes a reality everywhere. Jimmy’s nerves are obvious as the volunteers spread out across the area once again to count bees. Have his year-long efforts made a difference?
