Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces -  The Recapture

“People of the Philippines: I have returned! […] our forces stand again on Philippine soil – soil consecrated in the blood of our two peoples.”  Douglas MacArthur’s speech in October 1944 marked the Allied reconquest of the Philippines after two years of Japanese occupation, and a personal victory for the general. A few weeks earlier on September 21–22, 1944, he’d organized an air raid in Manila Bay and Coron Bay. It was a victory for America: 300 Japanese planes, 25 merchant vessels and several battleships were neutralized, eventually leading to the surrender of Japanese troops.

On February 11, 1945, the Americans and Filipino guerillas finally liberated Manila. Strewn beneath the crystal-clear waters of the island nation, amazing underwater wreckage tells the tale of liberation while preserving the memory of some of WWII’s bloodiest and most devastating sea battles.

Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces -  The Other Landings

Summer 1944. The Allies had a top-secret plan to liberate France: two simultaneous invasions from the northwestern and southern coasts in a pincer attack on the German forces that had occupied the land since 1942. And yet today, the general public only knows about one half of the operation. Because although the term “D-Day” naturally conjures Normandy beaches swarming with American soldiers, it was actually the invasion of Southern France on August 15, 1944 that sped up the liberation of Paris on August 25.

For the first time ever, we’ll tell the story of Operation Dragoon from a completely unprecedented underwater viewpoint. Kevin and his crew will dive deep into the English Channel and Mediterranean Sea in search of wreckage from ships, landing craft, spotter planes, torpedo launchers and minesweepers, bringing the naval expedition to life, and putting a face on those who lived it.

Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces - The Fall

“Fresh Japanese troops constantly arrived in great numbers by air or sea, while I could only bury my dead.” Thus recalled General Douglas MacArthur upon finding himself surrounded by the Japanese Army in the Philippines in 1942. The Pacific Battle of WWII had just begun. It would last three years, and the spectacular defeat of American forces at the unexpectedly powerful hand of the Japanese Empire was its opening act.

In April 1942, MacArthur was forced to flee the Philippines for Australia, abandoning his troops with a heavy heart. But he vowed to return and free the prisoners. Today, the Southeast Asian island nation is rich with underwater treasures from this tragic chapter in history. Kevin Sempé and his crew will dive into the deep waters of the Philippines in search of the vessels and battleships, as well as tanks and fighter planes, that tell the story of the Japanese invasion, and the desperate fight the Allied Forces put up.

Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces -  The Forgotten Shipwreck

Not far from the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River near the little town of Rimouski, Canada, lies the wreck of the ocean liner Empress of Ireland, a majestic transatlantic vessel commissioned to ply the sea route between Quebec and Liverpool. Its disappearance on May 29, 1914 was one of the most deadly shipwrecks in history after the Titanic. What unexpected event cost the lives of 1,012 of its passengers?  Braving icy waters and the dangers of this deep-sea dive, Kevin Sempé will try to understand how this massive vessel, which was on its 96th voyage across the Atlantic, could sink so quickly to the bottom of the river. WWI was declared just days after the ship sank, relegating its victims to the forgotten annals of History.

Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces - The Aircraft Carrier Island

Known for its mountainous landscapes and idyllic beaches, Corsica — the “Isle of Beauty”— is also home to hidden treasures. Beneath the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea off the island’s east coast lie over a dozen wrecks from WWII, waiting to be explored. Kevin and his crew will shed light on Corsica’s strategic location at the end of WWII and its key role in the Italian Campaign and preparations for the Allied invasion of Southern France. Finally, the discovery of several US Air Force planes will remind us that 17 airfields were built on the island, nicknamed “USS Corsica” by the US Army.

Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces -  Graveyard Of The German Fleet

Off the coast of Scotland in the bay of Scapa Flow, seven ships slumber at the bottom of the North Sea. They are German vessels — battleships and light cruisers from WWI. How did these ships sink and why? How did so many vessels go down in the same spot within just a few yards of each other? As we dive with Kevin Sempé and his team, we learn about one of the most emblematic events that marked the end of WWI: how the Kaiser’s fleet, interned at Scapa Flow by the Royal Navy, was scuttled when Germany chose to sink her own ships rather than let them fall into British hands.
