    Live on 4 第四台音樂會

From its headquarters in Geneva, the European Broadcasting Union encourages co-operation between broadcasters around the world, from Algeria to the Vatican State, from Hungary to Hong Kong. The organisation co-ordinates and promotes the exchange of audio/visual productions. The live recordings in Tuesday night’s Concert from Europe have been provided by members of the EBU for many years, but now RTHK Radio 4 will offer expanded coverage of EBU programmes, including special access to:

    • Exclusive concerts with the world’s outstanding orchestras, celebrated conductors, and stellar soloists
    • Broadcasts from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opéra
    • Finalist concerts from major international music competitions including Belgium’s Queen Elizabeth International
Music Competition and Germany’s ARD Music Competition
    • Performances from major festivals from around the world,(including world music and jazz festivals)

The Live on 4 band will feature concerts recorded live every Tuesday to Saturday night. Expect to hear more concert recordings from the BBC, and concerts recorded locally by Radio 4 with our own treasured orchestras, ensembles and soloists.

Concert Hall Classics – RTHK’s Treasured Recordings of Live Performances – Yu Lina and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra 音樂廳經典 — 香港電台珍貴現場錄音 - 俞麗拿與上海交響樂團

As an extension of the first series, the sequel of RTHK’s treasured recordings of live performances showcases the station’s own productions. From studios to a chorus to its name, Radio 4 has gradually emerged from a facilitator of fine music to an active music-maker in itself. The evolving process has been documented with recording of international artists. It was a time of the city’s economic takeoff in the 1970s, and there was always an interaction with musicians from the Mainland. All these features are captured in the next five episodes to celebrate the 90th anniversary of broadcasting in Hong Kong. 。

Yu Lina and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra
The 1987 performance of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO) at Sha Tin Town Hall is significant in many ways for Hong Kong as much as for China. As the oldest symphonic orchestra in China, SSO was also the first to appoint its Principal Conductor as the Executive Director, a role previously held only by the party chief. In his new role, Chen Xieyang chose Hong Kong for the first tour outside of the Mainland to showcase the latest reform of his 90-strong ensemble. In addition to ‘The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto, the orchestra’s signature work, played by the original soloist Yu Lina, the highlight of the concert was by Resident Composer Zhu Jian’er’s First Symphony. Chen recalls his decision to play the work, in which the four movements were marked by four punctuation marks: ?/!?/.../!: “What we present to overseas audiences should be China’s new masterpieces, and should reflect genuine themes such as a critique of the Cultural Revolution. It’s daring. But I am not afraid.”
